The area around Lingling has been producing oranges and tangerines for thousands of years, with records in ancient texts such as “Yugong” dating back to the Xia Dynasty, indicating the cultivation of citrus fruits in northern Hunan. During the Song Dynasty, Lingling extensively planted citrus fruits. In the same治 period of the Qing Dynasty, the “Annals of Anfu County” recorded that Lingling’s citrus fruits, including Niu Zhu, Shitou, and Longzhao varieties, were presented as premium fruits. The red-fleshed tangerines from Linli are exported to big and medium-sized cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xi’an, and are also exported to Russia and other countries.
