The area around Lingling has been producing oranges and tangerines for thousands of years, with records in ancient texts such as “Yugong” dating back to the Xia Dynasty, indicating the cultivation of citrus fruits in northern Hunan. During the Song Dynasty, Lingling extensively planted citrus fruits.
